Year of the Goat, good year to give birth?
A famous Chinese saying goes: “Only one in ten people born in the year of the Goat finds happiness” (十羊九不全), which means that the majority of people born in the year of the Goat are destined to miss their marriage, have no happy family and have bad luck. Most people in China believe that children born in the Year of the Goat will be not leaders but followers.
Thus, many Chinese couples decide to avoid having children during the year of the Goat. Previously, many of them desperately raced against time to try to give birth in 2014, the Year of the Horse. The year of the Horse is considered much more lucky than the year of the Goat.
Although it’s an old superstition, and it seems a bit silly, it still has an impact on Chinese society.
The year of the Sheep, the Goat or the Aries?
The Chinese are not sure about the answer to this question. In Chinese, the word 羊 (yáng) is a generic term, and can refer to a sheep (绵羊), a goat (山羊), a ram or goat (公羊), an antelope (羚羊), etc. There is therefore a lack of definition regarding the zodiac of the Goat in Chinese history.
However, most Chinese people and folklore experts believe that the Chinese zodiac animal is the goat, not the sheep. They have evidence to support their idea.
First of all, the Chinese zodiac is an invention of the Han people and they raised a lot of goats, not sheep. Thus, the zodiac animal refers more to the goat.
Then, instead of the image of the sheep, it is the image of the goat that often appears on Chinese zodiac stamps, paper-cuts and New Year paintings.
Finally, the goat was one of the 12 Chinese zodiac bronze statues located in the Old Summer Palace. Although the head has been lost, according to historical records, its current reproduction is the image of a goat.
Goats of wood, fire, earth, gold and water
In Chinese element theory, each sign of the zodiac is associated with one of the five elements: gold (metal), wood, water, fire and earth. For example, a wood goat is born once every 60 years.
One theory states that a person’s character traits are determined by their zodiac sign and element. There are therefore five types of goats, each with its own particularities:
Type of Goat | year of birth | Features |
---|---|---|
Wood Goat | 1955, 2015 | Friendly, gentle and compassionate |
Fire Goat | 1907, 1967 | Friendly, frank and honest. Always makes sure things are clean and tidy. |
Earth Goat | 1919, 1979 | Fair, honest, frank. Will never hurt his friends. |
Metal Goat | 1931, 1991 | Ambitious and caring, with a strongly developed sense of responsibility for work. Sometimes too stubborn. |
Water Goat | 1943, 2003 | Always ready to help others and can sacrifice their own interests for others. |
